Study of human memory and types of memory

Studies have shown that attention significantly affects memory during the encoding phase, but hardly at all during recall. Thus, distractions or divided attention during initial learning may severely impair subsequent retrieval success, whereas distractions at the time of recall may slow down the process a little, but has little to no effect on its accuracy.

Things that affect memory Human Memory The human brain was once considered a single organ with specific areas allotted for different tasks. Now, with the recent research and case studies, it has been concluded that the human brain is, in fact, one of the most complex organs of the body.

The memory that was once considered to be like a stack of folders kept in a single place is now attributed to function in many different parts of the brain. The brain is a large neural supercomputer that has neurons, firing information and tasks away to each other from one corner to the other.

There are three major ways of processing the memory, which include encoding, storage and retrieval. Encoding the memory is when any event, person, object or stimuli are sensed to be important.

For instance, you are at a party, and you meet someone and you want to remember their name. Such small chemical, visual, auditory and activity based stimuli first get converted into an electrical message that can be transferred from the neurons.

This process is known as encoding. The second stage of memory recording is storage. In this stage, the same memory is stored or kept in the brain to be used in due time. The third stage is the retrieval stage.

This is the process by which the memory that was once encoded and stored is recalled for use. For instance, when you meet the same person whom you met at the party a few days ago, you will instantly recognize his face due to your visual memory, his voice through your auditory complex and his name from your speech centre etc.

Our prefrontal cortex is not the centre of all the memory; instead what we do, what we say, what we hear and what we see are stored in different packages in different areas of our brain. That is why people with a traumatic brain injury in a certain part of the brain lose part of their memory, but they can still relate to activities, it is also why people have different approaches to learning and studies.

Some study visually by seeing and drawing out things while others are listeners and are more kinetic learners so they learn practically.Study of the genetics of human memory is in its infancy.

A notable initial success was the association of APOE with memory dysfunction in Alzheimer's Disease. The search for genes associated with normally varying memory continues. The biggest categories of memory are short-term memory (or working memory) and long-term memory, based on the amount of time the memory is stored.

Both can weaken due to age, or a variety of other reasons and clinical conditions that affect memory.

Human Memory - Psychology - Oxford Bibliographies Human subjects[ edit ] MRI of the human brain. It is usually desirable to study memory in humans because we have the ability to subjectively describe experiences, and have the intellect to perform complex and indirect tests of memory.
Other Subject Areas Declarative memory Declarative memory requires conscious recallin that some conscious process must call back the information.
The Study of Human Memory - The Human Memory Patient Story Short-term memory holds onto a few pieces of information at a time, around 4 to 9 items. It helps you remember a phone number for long enough to dial it, or remember something your teacher says for long enough to write it down.
The Human Memory - what it is, how it works and how it can go wrong Declarative memory Declarative memory requires conscious recallin that some conscious process must call back the information.
Human Memory - Psychology - Oxford Bibliographies Memory can manifest itself in a variety of ways. When people tie their shoelaces or ride bicycles, they rely on past experiences to execute sequences of motor behaviors that accomplish those tasks.

Neither is memory a single unitary process but there are different types of memory. Our short term and long-term memories are encoded and stored in different ways and in different parts of the brain, for reasons that we are only beginning to guess at.

The study of human learning and memory is vast, and the goal of the present article is to help orient new students of memory to the lay of the land in memory research.
